April Fools Pop Quiz

In honor of April Fools Day, I gave the youth group kids a pop quiz tonight. I told them that people had been slacking on Confirmation requirements. There had been an appalling lack of homily notes turned in, and many people had missed last weekend's Confirmation deadline. Now, they would have to pass this pop quiz in order to get confirmed and/or move onto the next grade. Check the comments to get the answers.

Confirmation Pop Quiz

Instructions: In order to be confirmed and/or pass to the next grade in youth group, you must pass this quiz. Fill in the blanks of all questions within the time allowed.

Scripture

1.       In which book of the Bible does the following passage appear in which the LORD compares Jerusalem to dirty underwear?___________________________________

“The LORD said to me: Go buy yourself a linen loincloth; wear it on your loins, but do not put it in water. I bought the loincloth, as the LORD commanded, and put it on. A second time the word of the LORD came to me thus: Take the loincloth which you bought and are wearing, and go now to the Parath; there hide it in a cleft of the rock. Obedient to the LORD'S command, I went to the Parath and buried the loincloth. After a long interval, he said to me: Go now to the Parath and fetch the loincloth which I told you to hide there. Again I went to the Parath, sought out and took the loincloth from the place where I had hid it. But it was rotted, good for nothing! Then the message came to me from the LORD: Thus says the LORD: So also I will allow the pride of Judah to rot, the great pride of Jerusalem. This wicked people who refuse to obey my words, who walk in the stubbornness of their hearts, and follow strange gods to serve and adore them, shall be like this loincloth which is good for nothing. For, as close as the loincloth clings to a man's loins, so had I made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah cling to me, says the LORD; to be my people, my renown, my praise, my beauty.”

2.       In which book of the Bible does this proverb appear? _______________________________
“As the dog returns to his vomit, so the fool repeats his folly.”

3.       Fill in the blanks in these verses from Song of Songs:
Your hair is like _________________________________ streaming down from Gilead.
Your teeth are like __________________________________which come up from the washing, All of them big with twins, none of them thin and barren (Song of Songs 6: 5-6).

Church History

4.       In Yankee Stadium, there is a memorial to former Yankee’s players called Monument Park. However, Yankee’s players are not the only ones honored in the park. Name the three former Cardinals honored in Monument Park:
_______________________________
_______________________________
_______________________________

5.       Read the following passage. In which great theological work did early church father St. Irenaeus mock Valentinus’ theology with “the Gourd, Superemptiness, the Cucumber, and the Melon”?
______________________________________

Iu, iu, and pheu, pheu!
Truly we may utter these exclamations from tragedy at such bold invention of ridiculous nomenclature, and at the audacity that made up these names without blushing…

There is a royal Proarche above all thought, a Power above all substance, indefinitely extended. Since this is the Power which I call the Gourd, there is with it the Power which I call Superemptiness. This Gourd and Superemptiness, being one, emitted, yet did not emit, the fruit, visible, edible, and delicious, which is known to language as the Cucumber. With this Cucumber there is a Power of like quality with it, which I call the Melon. These Powers, the Gourd, Superemptiness, the Cucumber, and the Melon, sent forth the remaining crowd of the delirious Melons of Valentinus.

Canon Law Vocabulary

6.       Fill in the blank to complete the following definitions:

______________________________ is the Sunday before Lent, the 50th day before Easter.

A ______________________________ is a minor Vatican official whose duty is to affix the leaden seal to solemn pontifical documents.

A ______________________________ is a firework, twirled by explosions, named because of its shape, which is similar to the instrument of a female saint’s martyrdom.

Saints

7.       Which beautiful female saint prayed for help in resisting a proposal of marriage and received a heavenly beard and mustache to help her? _______________________________________

8.       Which martyr’s name supposedly comes from the mislabeling of an expedited package?
____________________________________

9.       Which martyr had his fingers gnawed off? ________________________________________

10.   What holiday, celebrated today, would have been a favorite of trickster and Mexican martyr  Bl. Miguel Pro? _________________________________

I know #2 is Proverbs 26:11. It happens to be one of my favorite Verses. The quiz is very nice. Did you come up with it yourself?

Greg, the quiz was created by my supervisor and I. We pooled our collective knowledge of obscure and odd quotes, definitions and facts.

Angie, well done! The most anyone at youth group got was 2/10. Ah yes, I remember people joking about #3 in high school Bible studies. Good times.

Brilliant! If only I had thought of something like this, I could have tortured my 8th graders. Heck, I didn't even know most of them!
